Reading at Langtons Infant School & Nursery
Reading is at the heart of everything we do. It is a central part of every pupil’s life at our school. We instil a love of reading from the very beginning of their education to make sure every child at our school is a reader and so are their teachers. We provide the tools to enable all children to become confident readers during their time in our school. We aim for all children to become fluent readers. Our children will have practice to achieve the complex skill of reading and not just the simple act of decoding. Our children learn to read with prosody (expression and intonation) and develop a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of texts.
We provide many opportunities to read in school which include:
- Shared reading in their daily writing session
- Paired and independent reading in their Phonics lesson
- Paired and shared reading in Book Club
- Sharing a class book and story time at the end of each day.
- High quality texts in all other subects
As well as these scheduled opportunities to read in class we encourage the children and teachers in our school to foster a pleasure for reading. This includes a fortnightly 'Mystery Reader' to read their favourite book to the children during assembly. We have Stay and Read sessions throughout the year in which parents are invited into the classroom to read to their child or a group of children. Each classroom has a dedicated reading area filled with high quality books to ignite pleasure for reading and develop author knowledge. Each class has the opportunity to visit our school library to select a book of their choice to take home.
Book Club
Each week the children will work with the class teacher in a small group to read the book that they have taken home. This book will be marked in their reading as a 'TA' book which stands for Teacher Assessment. This book is aimed at the reading ability of each child and they should be able to read this book independently. During Book Club the children will also be given another book to take home to read for pleasure. They may need some guidance or support to read this second book. At this time, the children not working with the teacher have the opportunity to read their TA book to their peers and also have the opportunity to read a book of their choice.
You can support your child by listening to them read daily. You may wish to make comments in your child's reading record. To add further incentive to the children to read, we encourage RED TED (Read Every Day, Talk Every Day). There are many rewards the children can earn such as a pencil, bookmark or badge. Their are also a range of challenges to inspire our children to become life long readers; they include creating your own reading area, completing comprehension challenges and reading a book of your choice to your class. They will also get an opportunity to gain a raffle ticket which will be entered into a draw at the end of the year so that one lucky reader will win a bike!
School Library
Our school library is a wonderful resource for our children and we have endeavoured to fill it with quality texts that mirror our curriculum. The library contains many titles in an author's repertoire to underpin our pleasure for reading approach. It also includes 100 of the best children fiction and non-fiction books.
Local Library Visits
It is our aim to ensure our pupils become members of our local library. We want our children to have access to the rich variety of texts that the library offers. Our children have the opportunity to become mini-members which will last throughout their journey at Langtons Infant School & Nursery. Visits to the local library take place half-termly.
